Recycling
The city currently pays a healthy fee to a private landfill to dispose of our waste. On the other hand, we are actually paid for our recyclable waste when we drop it off at a recycling plant. The recycling program covers its own operating expenses with the revenue it generates.
In a nutshell: Throwing trash away is expensive. Recycling is cost-efficient. The more we recycle, the less we throw away, and the more taxpayer money we save. It is in our best interests, both economically and environmentally, to expand the recycling program.
I support mandatory recycling in all the city offices, larger recycling bins for the community, and increased public outreach and education on recycling. Any effort put forth to encourage recycling can result in immediate taxpayer savings.
